Dave Allen, Founder and Fancy Out-Loud Talker
David Alan Gilpin, aka Dave Allen, was born at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA on September 23, 1970. His family moved back to West Virginia in 1971 after his father was honorably discharged from the Army. Dave attended Mallory Grade School, Holden Elementary, Logan Junior High, and Logan High School. It was at Logan High where he got his first taste of radio on WLHS, the high school station operated by instructor Moss Burgess, and, where he began his promotional career in wrestling by booking his first show at Chapmanville High School in February of 1987 as well as the Tyrant concert at old Logan Theatre in the Fall of 1986. During high school, Dave worked at WLOG in Logan where he was the first DJ to play a CD on the air in Logan. It was New Kids on the Block’s “Hangin’ Tough”. And he hasn’t been the same ever since. After graduation, Dave attended Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College where he majored in Communications. He was on the staff of the Southern Newspaper, and appeared on several of Southern’s tv news programs. In 1990 he moved to Huntington to attend Marshall University where he majored in Public Relations and Broadcasting. His first assignment on WMUL was anchor of the noon news. In 1991, while still attending Marshall, Dave began working at WGTR/WJEH in Gallipolis, OH. In 1991, Dave left Marshall to accept the full-time position of News Director at WGTR/WJEH. While there he dove into public service and began his long career of working for community-centered programs. In 1993, Dave returned home to work for the premier sports and information station in Logan, WVOW. On August 2, 1993, the “Dave in the Morning” radio show premiered on WVOW. During his 20+ year career at WVOW, Dave brought a new level of community involvement to the station and made WVOW the true “Voice of the Coalfields”. Dave was President of the Logan County Jaycees, President of the Logan Rotary Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army, We-Can Children’s Program, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, City of Logan Development Council, Logan High School Class of 1988 Reunion Planning Committee, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College Academic Board of Advisors, Marshall University Big Green Foundation, Logan Area Public Library, Southern Foundation’s Harmony 365, and has been the house announcer at the Coalfield Jamboree since it opened in 1997. Dave has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including the Distinguished West Virginian Award which was presented by then Governor Bob Wise, Community Service Award winner presented by then Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, Logan County Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award winner, and past State President of the Year for the West Virginia Jaycees. On February 28, 2014, Dave hung up his headphones, thus ending the longest running morning show in West Virginia. On March 3, 2014, Dave launched his new endeavor, Dave Allen Communications. The company is community-centered and focused on public service, media relations, marketing, and public relations. He is currently a member of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and maintains many of his past associations with clubs and organizations he has worked so closely with for so many years. Dave is excited to begin this new chapter of his life and looks forward to working with you. He currently resides in Hurricane, WV with his wife, Ruth Ann, and his cat, Midnight.
